I was messing around with Flash’s rendering modes and I came up with a cool looking explosion effect. I started adding a few things and eventually the idea of some kind of Missile Command game started to evolve.
I looked around at several flash missile command variants and was surprised to find a few that were very nice. So instead of adding a ton of bells and whistles, and due to time constraints, I decided to focus on the simple arcade approach and hopefully have enough eye candy to make it a fun game to play.
The game uses real time additive blending on a bitmap background. This pushes the Flash vm into over drive and really taxes the rendering process. So I try to mix it up with regular alpha explosions in an attempt to keep the frame rate playable. But on higher levels with a ton of explosions going off, things will probably slow down on less capable machines. In that case, just sit back and enjoy the eye candy.
